From cream toners to moisture milks

Written by Julia on . Posted in Blog.

What began in Korea as ‘Cream Skin’ – an unusual combination of toner and cream – has sparked a global trend for new liquid skincare products that perfectly embody the ‘glass skin’ concept.

One of the best-known products in this hybrid category is likely to be Laneige’s Cream Skin Refiner from Korea, which was launched over eight years ago. The product has the texture and moisturising effect of a liquid toner whilst nourishing the skin like a light cream.

This milky facial toner served as the inspiration for Rhode’s famous Glazing Milk and has been imitated by many other brands. Under the name Milky Toner, this new product category has also made its way to Germany. The focus here is on supporting the skin barrier with ceramides or soothing active ingredients.

The Asian product category known as “Moisture Milk” or “Emulsion” could provide inspiration for the next stage of development. In Japan, the combination of a hydrating facial toner (lotion) and a milky emulsion (milk) is considered the basis of daily skincare. These emulsions have a light, creamy texture and are usually available in two versions, for both oily and dry skin. A serum or face cream can then be used in the routine as needed.

The aim of all these liquid products is to boost skin hydration and give the skin a glowing appearance.
